Choosing a good quality pair of sunglasses that last is no easy task. You need to know the brands to trust and make sure they’re comfortable, fit your face well, and have quality lenses, among other little preferences and quirks.

Choosing the frame
- 👉 Durable materials: Unless you want to buy disposable glasses, this will save you from having to buy a new pair every time you accidentally drop them or they brush against something in your pocket. Better for your wallet, and better for the planet.
- 👉 Lightweight materials: avoid cast iron, studded wrought iron or anything that will turn you into a bobblehead. It's cool at a metal concert, but a little less so in everyday life.
- 👉 Shape: This is the most important thing. Choose the right style of glasses for your face shape. Rectangular face? Rounded glasses can break up the angles a bit. More of a round face? Square or rectangular frames are flattering.
- 👉 Size: If you buy online, make sure you don't end up with ski goggles by understanding the correct measurements for your face size.
Choosing your lenses
- 👉 Protection: It is absolutely essential to protect eyes from sunlight. Just because some lenses look dark doesn't mean their protection is better. Instead, check the CE standard and sunglasses category, to ensure you are fully protected from harmful UV rays and see what index they’ve been assigned. You can usually find this stamped on the inside of one of the glasses arms. For day-to-day use, Category 3 is the best standard of protection.
- 👉 Technology: Choose between different USPs including anti-fog, anti-scratch, anti-smudge, anti-blue light, photochromic (tinted with UVs), polarized lenses... The choice is yours.
- 👉 Color: Contrary to appearances, lens color can greatly vary your perception of the world, and even enhance your performance. Have you ever seen sports shooters and their yellow lenses? Gamers and their distinctive tinted lenses? Performance can be improved by certain colors, not just style.
- 👉 Lens type: There are a few types of materials lenses are commonly made from.
- Mineral: A heavy glass with low impact resistance, but better scratch resistance and superior optical comfort. The catch is that this isn’t a commonly used material for sunglasses.
- Organic: Less scratch-resistant but has better shock resistance
- Polycarbonate: The king of lenses. Light, resistant, and capable of filtering 100% of UVs.
